“Never do it the political way!”

These were Wilhelm Reich’s words regarding past attempts to improve social conditions through politics. He continues:

“People will get very enthusiastic about it. They will glow. They will burn for you. But their structures won’t follow. Their character structures can’t follow. Then you are in trouble… This discrepancy between what a human being wants, what he dreams of, what he intellectually understands as true and good and what he actually can do, i.e., what his structure, the character structure, really permits him to do, is quite a problem…It is also the gap where religion comes in with the idea of paradise.”

Today, in our anti-authoritarian society, people are being deprived of their illusory hopes in religion as it is being replaced by the a secularized, intellectualized version of it in the form of socio-politics. They are losing whatever contact that they had with themselves at the time when their emotions were tied in to their personal and religious beliefs. Today, people are more out of touch with themselves and their world than they were in the past authoritarian era.

Now more than ever, a functional understanding of what is happening to our society is vital to prevent further degradation. This knowledge is being made available through a lecture series on Social Orgonomy open to the public given by the American College of Orgonomy.

The Common Understanding Of “Character” Is Not Enough

In a recent Wall Street Journal article “America’s Crisis of Character” (April 21-22 2012), conservative columnist Peggy Noonan cites that the week’s Gallup poll showed that only 24% of Americans feel that the nation was on the right track.  She attributes the  dissatisfaction to the widespread cultural degradation that is taking place in every area of American life . She is “worried about the American character-who we are and what kind of adults we are raising.”

Typical of conservatives, the use of the concept of character in this way is unfortunately fraught with strong pejorative and moral overtones (i.e. “good” vs “bad” character) and is, therefore, of not much help in providing an understanding and management of the source of social problems.

There is now a true science of character. First  discovered by Wilhelm Reich and extended into the social and political arena by Elsworth Baker, knowledge of characterology can dramatically help people  to effectively deal with today’s social destructiveness. Reich described character functionally as the individual’s stereotypical manner of acting and reacting in all, (including social and political) situations.  The primary function of  character is to protect (armor) the individual from feeling unpleasant and unacceptable emotions and sensations.  A functional understanding of  character can be essential to know how a person will behave in any given social situation.

Our anti-authoritarian society is the result of the breakdown of the traditional authoritarian family and of the numerous kinds of impulsive an anti-social character types that are currently littering the social landscape.  Today’s anti-social behavior that Ms. Noonan describes in her article is a direct result of this breakdown.  Without an understanding of the function of character armor and of the anti-authoritrian transformation of society that we are living in, all attempts at trying to make sense of what is happening to our society are  bound to be futile.  The only thing the political right can accomplish is to retard the social degradation into socialism.  It can do nothing to arrest or reverse it.

Two Ways Of Destroying The Science Of Orgonomy

Armored humans have at their disposal two ways to avoid having understanding of themselves that the science of orgonomy can provide. The first method, overt suppression, was typically used prior to 1960 when the authoritarian social order was intact. This method included direct attacks on Wilhelm Reich and his co-workers by the scientific establishment that finally resulted in sending the great scientist to his death in prison and in the public burning of his books.

In today’s anti-authoritarian social order, almost everything is permitted. Now, overt suppression is no longer necessary. It has been replaced by a more humane, “enlightened” method. Regarding psychiatric therapies, every kind of treatment under the sun is allowed and placed on an equal footing regardless of its merit. This means that even the science of orgonomy and medical orgone therapy can now be permitted and placed alongside everything else out there. This view, in effect, degrades  the uniqueness of the science of orgonomy and its therapy, medical orgone therapy. As a result, most people when exposed to a presentation on medical orgone therapy who know nothing about it are naturally left with the feeling that that there is nothing special about it.

The uniqueness of medical orgone therapy done by a qualified medical orgone therapist has to do with its qualitative differences from all other forms of therapy both in terms of the process and in the results of therapy. These differences cannot be sufficiently described in words. They have to be experienced to be understood.
